The World Environment Day (WED) is marked globally on the 5th June of every year. The day was established by the UN General Assembly on 5th June 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment. It expounds on the importance of the environment and its fundamental nexus to development. At the same time, another resolution was adopted by the General Assembly creating the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The WED is therefore a day set aside to rededicate our efforts and commitment to environmental protection and conservation while taking stock of the achievements made globally.. In Kenya, WED was domesticated into the national policies through cabinet minute 136/84 of 1984. The day has since been commemorated country wide to promote environmental awareness among citizenry - individuals and corporate - responsibility towards the environment.
In February the new ReCoMap Seaweed Project at Kibuyuni on the South Coast started to lay out the first nurseries and farm areas. Two new staff have been recruited by our partner TDCMT to support the first 20 farmers lay out the seaweed farms. Project manager Khakim Mwatondo is overseeing the project for Pact Kenya based out of the Mombasa office.
Pact Kenya has just heard that its proposal to the EU - also for supporting local poor farmers to undertake seaweed farming as well as honey production in Msambweni District on the South Coast has been approved and will begin in April this year. PK is working with Kwetu and TDCMT on this project which will dovetail nicely with our other seaweed project in the area. The project is for 3 years and as well as training local farmers in mariculture and agriculture it will provide business development support to the farmers and help them link their produce to markets.
Also in February Pact Kenya began a process of improving its performance management by going through a facilitated 'Balanced Scorecard' exercise. This will help Pact Kenya set out some indicators and targets to measure progress towards the implementation of its Strategic Plan. Both the SMT and Staff have been involved and this will be an ongoing process from now on. This will be the focus of our next Away Day at the end of MarchWe will keep you posted.

On 8th March 33 members of Pact Kenya’s Self Help Groups from Mtwapa participated in a gathering organized by MYWO, Kilifi District to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event was held in the Takaungu Village Polytechnic grounds and was graced by the presence of the area MP, Hon Ben Gunda. There was marching and dancing and celebrating by the various women’s groups that were represented. This was a good opportunity for Pact Kenya’s SHGs to market the Self Help Approach so that more people understand how it has transformed the lives of very poor women. They have been able to mobilize resources from scratch and are now loaning from the pooled kitty they have built up in the past 3 years to meet their basic needs and they are even venturing into addressing community social needs as well. For the first time these poor women had an audience with their area MP and were able to convince him to visit their area on 15th March 2010.
The German Ambassador to Kenya Mrs Margit Hellwig-Boette accompanied by her husband Mr. Gerd-Josef Boette visited the Self Help Groups (SHGs) at Mtepeni in Mtwapa on 25th June 2010. Over 1000 SHG members were present to receive her. Also present during the occasion were the area MP, Hon. Ben Gunda, councilLors and other leaders from the area.
