Welcome to Pact Kenya’s new website.
Pact Kenya is a fairly young Kenyan NGO working together with others for positive change. Established in 2001 Pact Kenya has grown from a handful of people to over 50 staff in its nearly seven years of existence. Pact Kenya is a development organisation focusing on capacity building. It is committed to building the capacity of local organisations, networks and coalitions working in one or more of 4 thematic platforms that Pact Kenya believes are crucial to reducing poverty and to Kenya’s sustainable development.  It builds capacity through grant making, organisational development and a range of other tailor made interventions targeted to help local people and their organisations address the challenges they face. These challenges might be within their communities, between communities and within the country. It also works across borders in the region where needed – such as in addressing conflict and natural resource issues. Please explore this website to read more about Pact Kenya and what we do.

Pact Kenya 2008-2012 Strategic Plan
Pact Kenya has produced its first ever Strategic Plan. This was developed ‘in house’ with contributions from all our staff towards the end of 2007 and sets out what Pact Kenya wants to do in the next 5 years as well as the why and the how. Underpinning the Strategic Plan is a commitment to becoming an organisation of excellence in that timeframe.  This will take considerable focus and effort and a willingness to continue to learn and improve on how we do things now.  However it is vital for our long term sustainability that we rise to that challenge.

Pact Kenya undertakes assessment of Self Help Groups in Kilifi
From July 15th to July 19th the Pact Kenya staff from the Nyali, Mombasa office undertook an in depth assessment of the Self Help Groups that have been established under the YMCA Kilifi Branch. Over these five days the PK staff visited 5 different locations within Bahari and Ganze Divisions of Kilifi District.  In all they met with about 350 women from about 40 Groups.

The reason for the assessment was because of problems that had arisen in the support being provided by the YMCA.  The purpose was to ascertain if the Groups were still functioning and if so to what degree and if so what should be done in the future to help them. The PK Team worked with two of the local SHG Community Facilitators and found that most of the Groups did still meet but that they were struggling to grow through lack of consistent training and support.

The PK Team designed and implemented a series of questions to better understand the situation for these Groups.   This included a participatory rural appraisal approach that enabled the Groups to self assess their own group.  The Team was also able to analyze the size and reason for loans taken by all the women they met. From this it was found that the Groups were saving and loaning but that many of the loans were taken for addressing emergency issues and only 20% were to try income generating activities. From all this assessing PK was able to identify what assistance the Groups needed and has developed a plan to provided intensive training support to these Groups until the end of the year.   This support will be provided by the same Pact Kenya Mombasa Office Team.

Launch of New Tourism Products
The Launch by the Minister for Tourism Hon. Najib Balala, of the Mombasa Boat Owners Association tourist bus and a Dhow and the Tube Renters’ pedal boats and life saver jackets marked a major milestone in the empowerment journey of these two local small scale operators at the Jomo Kenyatta Public site. The Tourism Trust Fund (TTF) grant managed through Pact Kenya has enabled a holistic capacity building and business assets

acquisitions by and for the two community associations. The support has enabled the two groups introduce new products and offer superior service to both local and international tourists. This achievement will make both MBOA and Tube Renters Associations to more competitively participate in the tourism business while linking the lower end operators with the mainstream providers of tourism products at the coast. Pact Kenya will continue to work with and support the two enterprises to enhance their business performance and growth.
