The 41-year-old joined Act! in 2001 and was appointed chief executive in October 2007. He takes up a position in December this year as Deputy Country Director for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation.
“It has been the toughest decision of my life to leave Act!, he explained, “but the opportunity to work closely with the children and families who benefit from the Foundation’s programmes was ultimately too compelling to turn down”.
Syengo leaves Act! in its strongest ever position since launching in 2001. It is enjoying record breaking revenues, employs over 80 people and recently marked a 10th anniversary by implementing a rebranding programme to establish its identity as an independent Kenyan NGO. Titus is not entirely bidding farewell to Act! but will be joining the board of directors and will therefore still be part of Act! family.
He has over 16 years experience of managing large development projects. As Director of Sudan Programmes at Pact Kenya he witnessed the milestone signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Before that he was a member of the management team spearheading a food security and conflict management programme in 10 East African countries.
Syengo has first hand knowledge of running programmes covering everything from women empowerment, democracy and governance to agribusiness, livelihoods, environment and natural resources. The young man who began work building computers in the private sector never thought he would become a leading voice in championing the rights of poor and marginalized groups.
“Kenya’s civil society is vibrant and has a critical role to play in this country,” he commented. “It ensures that the government and the private sector take account of our citizens’ democratic rights in all their decisions.”
